Physical Description

Kriegers are a large, bipedal mammalian species with long, whiskered snouts. They have large, clawed and padded hands with 4 relatively short digits and an additional opposable thumb. Their dexterity typically enables them to manipulate simple tools and weaponry, but due to their natural posture, it is uncomfortable if not impossible for them to use most guns effectively. As a result, kriegers are far more effective in close range combat, either with melee weapons, or with their own powerful jaws and sharpened claws. A krieger's hind legs are long and powerful, with 4-toed, digitigrade padded feet. As ambush predators, they are unnervingly swift, but cannot sprint for very long. A typical krieger's tail is stiff and thick at the base, but retains some mobility and is often used to communicate with others.

Due to their mostly nocturnal behavior, Kriegers have highly specialized eyes that are able to sense even the lowest amount of light. They have a powerful bite force and the ability to grasp prey, which made them very successful hunters. Their whiskers and ears also aid in their ability to sense prey in low light.

Kriegers can have a large variety of coat colors and textures depending on the region of their planet their ethnic group is native to. Their fur naturally comes in neutral or earthy tones and may be adorned with patterns ranging between spots, stripes, rosettes, or other more complex color variations. Kriegers from colder climates tend to have very thick, insulating fur while individuals closer to their planet's equator typically have shorter, less heat-retaining coats. Some males may have manes of varying colors and lengths as well. It is also possible for female kriegers to sport a mane, but this is far less common.

Personality

Kriegers are a highly social species that forms strong bonds amongst one another. Their ancestors lived in complex social groups with roles assigned according to their abilities, independent of their physical sex or gender presentation. Most krieger social groups have a binary gender system, though some include a third gender that some kriegers may identify as, independent of their original assigned gender. Regardless of their gender presentation, most kriegers are quite fashionable and like to cut and dye their fur into different styles, some of which are linked to their ethnic background on their home planet. In an extraterrestrial setting, kriegers are highly curious about other species and will often mimic fashion trends in their own way.

Krieger behavior is cathemeral - in most temperate conditions, individuals are found napping for a few hours six to seven times in a 27-hour period equivalent to their home planet's rate of rotation. This sleeping pattern has been quite convenient for interplanetary travel, as a krieger is reliably well-rested and alert upon their arrival to a new settlement.

Most, if not all kriegers, regardless of their physical makeup, have deep, rumbly voices. Their native language consists mostly of a series of tonally distinctive trills and murmurs that can be quite difficult to replicate in other species. The most notable vocalization a krieger might make occurs when an individual is especially content. Some studies have found that the deep, rhythmic rumbling in a comfortable krieger's throat correlates with accelerated healing rates in bone fractures, both in the individual and organisms around them.

Krieger culture involves a vast number of ceremonies, the most important of which grant a krieger their name. Upon their birth or introduction into a new family, a young krieger is given by a parent or caretaker a single-word name that is most often related to naturally occuring phenomena, such as Fire, Dew, Night, or sometimes the name of a local flora or fauna. Multisyllabic names are usually acceptable, but the longer a krieger's birth name is, the more frowned upon it might be - long, difficult to pronounce names are considered a sign of overly-conceited caretakers, who wish to live vicariously through their offspring.

Once grown into adolescence, typical kriegers gain a single-word suffix in a coming-of-age ceremony that differs slightly between various krieger social groups, often involving the social role the individual wishes to fill. This name is considered a great honor to receive, though kriegers that wish to fill a different social role may receive a name-changing ceremony later in life.

History

Kriegers quickly established themselves as the apex predator on Euvis, eventually forming communities governed by a small council. These early krieger settlements underwent a series of industrial revolutions specific to each of the five continents on Euvis, all of which led to independent technological advances that ultimately prepared the krieger species for their introduction to interplanetary travel.

As a space-faring species, kriegers' friendliness and curiosity as a social species as well as their large, muscular bodies skyrocketed their appeal as crewmates, social workers, and managers. They're generally tolerant of other species, and their strong sense of morality and honor make them popular in legal settings across the universe.

Home Planet

Euvis is a lush, forested planet with large patches of both tropical and temperate rainforests, very little aridity, and mountainous boreal forest regions with a thick layer of permafrost at each pole. A large variety of spore-bearing vascular plants litter the forest floor while many large, woody fungal species have grown to fill the niche of trees. One notable massive fungal species has a stiff, waxy cap with resin that acts as an antifreeze in more frigid temperatures.

The dominant fauna on Euvis are mammals. Kriegers that practice animal husbandry farm large mammalian herbivores that can comfortably switch between a bipedal and quadrupedal stance, filling a role similar to that of hadrosaurs on a dinosaur-dominated planet.

Euvis is orbited by two moons, Morvus and Sarus, both of which have little to no atmosphere and cannot support multicellular life.

Subspecies

Shorthair: The most common species variant. The majority of their planet has a warm climate, so the vast majority have short coats that do not retain heat.

Longhair: Kriegers that are native to the polar caps of Euvis. They have longer and thicker insulating fur. They have a thick undercoat that grows during colder months and sheds when it becomes warmer, which is a really embarrassing process. They prefer to groom most of it in one session outside, where the shed undercoat can blow away in the wind and be used by small animals as nesting material.

Coats that are kept well-brushed and mat-free allow for good air circulation through the hair, which actually has a cooling effect in hotter areas.

Pygmy: Some kriegers adapted to living on islands on Euvis, causing them to evolve a smaller size over many generations to better fit their limited environment. These individuals are 6 feet tall and 15 feet long on average, making them easier to fit in smaller ships. They also tend to have narrower skulls and larger ears proportionally.

Pygmy kriegers have a unique voyaging culture and quickly spread throughout different islands early on in history with their wooden boats. Their ethnic groups sometimes experience discrimination in other parts of their planet; they have a reputation for being sly thieves due to their small size and increased agility.

Special

None.

Trivia

• Pygmy kriegers are genetically descendants of longhaired kriegers from the polar caps. They have medium to long fur and if placed in a cold environment, they even grow undercoats.

• Kriegers have developed ranged weaponry of their own, but the vast majority of ranged weapons in the universe are incompatible with their body plan. If a krieger wants to use a ranged weapon, they would have to get a krieger-made one which can be very inconvenient. These weapons are typically a set of robotic arms that can be manipulated to aim many types of ranged weaponry. An accompanying eyepiece helps the user accurately aim.
