Morkoz

Mind Eaters / Takers of Knowledge

Morkoz
“…and I thus beheld the creature, a wretched thing of convulsing matter wrapped in sodden epidermal. It did not speak but from its maw issued a clattering rattle that seemed to me a laugh, as a writhing probe slithered forth from that profane orifice.” — Excerpt from 'Horrors beyond!'

Common Traits
[Unreadable] Neutral trait
This character shows a lack of expression, or is able to switch from being expressive to having a lack of it. This character can be hard to read for both friends and foe. You may also be unable to see the morale, sanity, and general feelings of this character in the crew logs.
[Photographic memory] Positive trait
This character has been remembering everything since the very start of their memories. They can recall incredibly fine details from things that happened years ago and they can almost instantly memorize anything they see or witness.
[Racist] Negative trait
This character negatively or positively judges others based on what they were born as and not on the person's actions. This character will commonly review the social standing of a person by their species and race when they see them. This is different from the classist trait as this character does not judge on the character's social standing but the social standing of their entire race. It is possible for a speciesist to see all higher races as scum of the earth and lower species as absolutely perfect.
Gods

The morkoz don't appear to worship, but they have been seen dedicating their assorted rituals to "The Reaving Intelligence" elsewise referred to as "The Xanthous One" their feelings toward this being is unclear but undoubtedly very intense.

Physical Description

A morkoz is a bulbous and awkward looking creature, baring some degree of resemblance to comely creature of insectile pedigree, though centauroid in construction. They stand from the pads of feet to the crown of their bulbous head, a proud seven feet tall, and command a space reaching about as wide.

Their bodies are covered in a porous, epidermis that is both yielding and firm to the touch, like some sort of mostly inflated balloon. It is covered all about by stiff long hair-like structures, which permit the morkoz to see, hear, and otherwise perceive the world around them. Their skin, often roils and pulses with the unseen undulations of their interior anatomy, and sometimes seeps strange fluids which give their body its slick greasy character.

Their coloration for the most part is a pale off-white coloration, with patches and markings of subtle coloration spread about certain areas of their body. These splotches of color, while subtle or even dull to the senses of most creatures, due to the morkoz peculiar form of sensory awareness, appear far more vibrantly and distinctly.

They have a lower body consisting of a vaguely insectile abdominal that pulses and writhes to the movements of the enigmatic organs within. It is bulbous and somewhat conical, tapering to a narrowing point at the end, terminating in a brush of thick fibers. Jutting rudely forth from the sides are three pairs of strange, yet deceptively coordinated legs. They possess a strange structure wholly dissimilar to that of most creatures, bending at peculiar points and baring weight in a way unnatural to most things. The feet are capped in bulbous dark protrusion, and are slightly adhesive to assist their ambulatory means.

Extending upward from this abdomen, is a narrow tubular spine entering into the space of a rigid emaciated torso. While baring the appearance of skeletal rigidity, like most parts of the morkoz's body it shudders and strains against its structure, seemingly rigid bone segments, twitching and shifting beneath the skin. Extending outward from the back are a series of tube-like structures, typically four though more and less can occur.

What purpose these tubes serve is unclear, they flex and bend to the rhythms of the morkoz's bodily functions and exude a sickly sweet rotting stench.

Extending outward from their torso, they have a pair of bulbous, gaingly arms. They are long, lanky, and possessed of a deceptive degree of flexibility in spite of their construction. What passes for a hand is largely indistinct from the wrist, and features three grasping digits. Each of these possess a long talon that makes up the majority of their length, and are indeed dangerously sharp.

Atop the torso, is a large bulging head. Shaped in a manner like some sort of peculiar ovoid folding into the structures of their face. Across the surface of said "face" is a series of ridges and folds which obfuscate the otherwise apparent fact that they entirely lack eyes. Rather, the extensive series of sensory hairs across their body permit them to "see" in their manner. Additionally they have a pair of extended tendrils framing the front of their face which serve as their "lead" sensory organs, "directing" the focus of the otherwise wide and open senses.

At the bottom of their head, is what passes for a mouth. A narrow maw flanked by a quartet of flexible mandibles ending in sharp spikes, which possess a deceptive degree of strength in order to penetrate the thick skulls that protect their preferred form of sustenance. Within the narrow orifice of their mouth snakes a long, thing, proboscis, which they utilize to snake into the narrow channels that abide most creature's bodies, to gain access to the rich sustenance within.

Personality

Morkoz are largely inscrutable creatures who are incredibly hard to understand. Their lack of a spoken or written language that would understood by others as such is certainly of no help to this point. They are a secretive and withdrawn people who prefer to focus on their goals of accumulating knowledge, and achieving mastery of their space through this.

The morkoz are a species dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, but not in the manner that most denizens of the universe would be. Morkoz all possess a powerful eidetic memory, these don't forget anything they've learned, and as such have not found any compelling reason to record their vast knowledge in any form of recorded. All their knowledge is stored within their minds, and thus they treasure the mind and its store of information far greater than that of any library, or archive, or computer system.

This notion colors their approach to learning a great deal, as they are principally dedicated to understanding the mind and its relation to the numerous systems of reality connected to it. But more to the point, the morkoz favor the acquisition of minds or more accurately, of brains seeking to probe and penetrate their deeply held secrets to add them to their own collective knowledge and comprehension.

"The Universe is a open market of unguarded minds."

They lack any sort of regard for non-morkoz beyond the valuation of the contents of their minds. Indeed that non-morkoz possess what are, by their estimation, deeply inferior mental faculties they perceive their extraction of the "decaying" thoughts of other creatures to be a vituous pursuit, insofar as the morkoz care to justify their actions to others at all.

This is not to suggest that they do not have the capacity for familiarity with non-morkoz, but it is similar to the manner in which one might develop familiarity with a pet or rather fancy robot.

Their fascination and love of the brain, extends into a broader fixation on organic systems and the synthesis of technology and biology. They are consummate geneticists to the point that their most well understood sensibility is the enthusiasm with which they approach macabre experiments in genetic engineering. Indeed when they're seen they are often seen accompanied by an entourage of the results of these experiments

Amongst their own kind they are, if anything, more inscrutable. They congregate in elaborate academic orders to discuss the subjects that acquire their interest, to expand the wholeness of their understanding of things. Yet, being as they are creatures that remember everything, and possess a fairly absolute knowledge of the objective "hard" facts of which they are privy too, it is unclear what sorts of things they are truly discussing. They are goal oriented and practical, and lack an obvious interest in what might be regarded as frivolous pursuits.

History

By their own deliberate design, morkoz history is poorly understood by the universe at large. They lack any sort of recorded history, keeping the secrets of their past locked safely within the vaults of their incredibly well developed minds.

It is known that the morkoz had been quietly spreading through the universe for far longer than they had been known about by the universe at large. Through means not fully understood they had been traveling across space establishing outposts on isolated, and technologically inferior worlds, performing their bizarre and often cruel experiments on the local populations, and absorbing theirk knowledge into their collective.

This state of affairs proceeded until the leader of notail's X-class at the time, decided that they were going to illuminate these mysterious creatures. There thus proceeded an elaborate game of silkat and bombat.

The X-class leader, a very self-important and arrogant example of a notail, never even put thought the possibility that they were being played by a manner of alien intelligence. And so it was that they were drawn into the depths of a purpose built labyrynth of strange geometries. There the notails were drawn apart, split piece-by-piece by the coterie of morkoz. Soon the X-class leader themselves was the only one left, dragged deep into the spiraling tunnels, where in a turn of fate that the notail did not appreciate the irony of, it would be them that would be subject to cruel and invasive experimentation by dispassionate, faceless aliens.

After concluding their work, the morkoz dealt with the remains, in their manner, and through this, gained knowledge of a great many pieces of information and secrets of the universe that they had previously been privy and through that knowledge began to further thrive.

From this point on the morkoz expanded their menace on the universe. Having gleaned from the notails their secrets of faster than light travel, they greatly accelerated their unknown goals.

In the time since, the various factions of the universe have made efforts to restrain the potential expansion of the morkoz, engagin in numerous wars of restriction against them. For the most part, these have been successful, as the morkoz have mostly been relegated to lawless sectors of the universe to engage in their predations.

Home Planet

The morkoz home world of Morgolor, sometimes called Morkozha, is an enigmatic sphere in a discrete pocket of space. From what can be gleaned, Morgolor is a tumultuous sphere orbited by dozens of stars, and populated wholly by creatures of flesh and bone. Ages ago the morkoz perfect arcane scientific arts to ensure the secrecy of their home world from all prying eyes. It is a matter of popular urban-myth by those interested in the morkoz, to assert that their home world can indeed, only be reached by those that do not see, or at least, not with their eyes.

Subspecies

None / Unknown.

Special

Intellect Feasting: Morkoz are capable, fully, of sustaining themselves off of mundane forms of sustenance, principally liquified meats and the like. What they truly crave however are not the physical proteins or nutrients that fuel bodily function, but rather the thoughts encoded in the mind. Through means poorly understood the morkoz are capable of devouring the thoughts and memories of creatures by devouring their brains.

Combined with the morkoz's ability of perfect recall, this is why the morkoz do not keep physical records, as when a morkoz dies, another, typically a favored disciple, will ritualistically devour the fallen's brain, absorbing all his thoughts and memories.

Under most circumstances this simply results in the morkoz gaining said knowledge and memories, but on occasion the "willpower" of the creature is sufficiently strong that their persona can overcome that of the morkoz. When this occurs with another morkoz, this is no cause for alarm, but in the extremely uncommon event that is occurs with an alien, the reaction is rather… severe.

Trivia

• The morkoz are not thoroughly dispassionate, though their emotional considerations are as inscrutably alien as their bodies, they still experience calls to boredom and desires for stimulation. They generally go about this by utilizing their not insubstantial skill to fashion amusing flesh-machines, most of which are constructed out of scrap biomatter.

• Most of.

• The morkoz speak in a esoteric language that defies most conventional methods of translation. Even aftiks, naturally gifted with special powers in this field, can only mostly understand what a morkoz is saying most of the time.
