The anomalous effect of M-411148342, henceforth referred to as “Mama,” makes describing her effectively difficult. If you have previously viewed her, whether in person or through photos, you will parse any information about her as just “being a weird M-class.” So it doesn’t matter that she is nearly 10 feet tall, covered in hair, has massive claws at the end of each finger, walks on all fours on most occasions, and has a snout so pronounced that her face hangs a few inches away from her mask. Most people just see her as a hairy M-class who doesn’t speak much. In reality, these traits are typical for a member of Ursus arctos.
It is due to this reason that all investigations have to be made through a second party. Anyone who has actually met or seen her is considered compromised and is unable to see her for what she truly is. While it’s possible to “logic out” that every description of Mama describes a large grizzly bear, it is incredibly difficult to continue study of her when your every instinct is telling you, “This is just a really hairy notail.”
Curiously, Mama has an incredible drive to protect and care for notail children, despite being a member of a completely different species. As described in the report below, this could be her compensating for the loss or lack of her own cubs, though this cannot be determined. If it wasn’t for the fact that she’s had such a positive effect on the newer generation of notails she would have been removed a long time ago. As is, there is significant pushback against removing her, both because of her anomalous effect causing them to believe her to be just another coworker and the raw data saying it would be detrimental to the children.
Excerpt from I-5236’s case file “Aware of the Bear”
As M-411148342 cannot speak, we only have a rough idea as to her history from before she joined the Cuckoo Claw village, though her den in the wild gives us some clues. In her den there seems to be evidence of notail habitation, such as synthetic bedding, crude wall decorations, and scraps of clothing. It is believed that M-411148342 took in a notail child many years in the past, a theory strongly supported by records of a large number of children presumed lost to an anomalous eyegret close to Mama’s territory around the same timeframe. Possible reasons for this may be compensation for the loss or inability to have cubs of her own. M-411148342 would have been around the age for child rearing during that time frame, and her den doesn’t show signs of habitation by more than one bear.
If this theory is correct, then the amount of time the child spent living with M-411148342 as her cub would be around eight years, judging by the height of activity on the cave walls crossed with the average height-by-age of other notails born in that same batch. After this, it appears the cave was assaulted by a large creature, possibly the same eyegret as evidenced by similar scrape markings on the trees and cave walls. Judging by the wounds on M-411148342 and the fact that there are no additional signs of notail habitation in the cave, it is assumed that the notail child was killed in this confrontation and that M-411148342 either slain or drove off the assailant. As V-1246 notes in their report (and double checked by another, non-affected V-class), M-411148342's wounds and bones have healed strangely, almost as if it healed over the course of minutes rather than weeks like it should. This leads me to believe that it was either during or very shortly after this encounter that M-411148342 became blessed, an event that quite possibly saved her life.
From here, it can be surmised that M-411148342 developed her obsession with raising children, either as a side-effect of the blessing or trauma from losing her surrogate child. Regardless of the cause, M-411148342 soon wandered into Cuckoo Claw wearing the tattered clothes and face of her child. This is probably why so many assumed she was that particular notail returning, and not just some random M-Class as would happen otherwise.
Blessed: Mama is quite clearly blessed, with a small pair of floating wings on her back and a gently glowing heart pattern on her chest. It is theorized that the tendency for notails to brush off Mama’s ursine characteristics and view her as an M-class is connected to this blessed status in some way.
• Remarkably, very few ducklings have been documented under Mama’s care. It is thought that this is purely a result of Mama’s blessing combined with exposure to other ordinary M-classes.
• It is unknown if the notail child Mama raised was a duckling. They would be a little outside of the typical age range, but the only other explanation is that they willingly lived with an adult grizzly bear for several years.
• While most people see Mama as an M-class notail, there are a few outliers, particularly in the case of O-3. Due to an unrelated incident, O-3 went to Cuckoo Claw to examine a peculiarity in the current generation of capture creatures. It was there that he saw Mama taking her children on a field trip, and casually remarked that a mother dragator was a fine guardian for the children. The implications of this are still being discussed among I-classes.
