Stranger
The Stranger has attracted a group of people by staring at them for the last 10 minutes while wearing a "Amazing Items for Sale!" sign. Thankfully this group hadn't tried throwing rocks at him for being "a weird animal" this time.
Stranger
He trots behind Herr and looks proud of himself. Herr pauses and stares at the sign.
Herr
"Awww, little buddy, you forget to turn over the sign to the "looking for help" sign." Herr sighs while taking the sign off of the Stranger.

Herr awkwardly scratches his chin as the prospective buyers approach. "Aha ha ha. Uh this is awkward pals, but we actually don't have anything you would want to buy right now. We're actually looking to get help with finding new product ideas. Maybe products that don't require a big machine to make, for example."

"Not unless you want to buy a carpet. No one ever wants to buy a carpet."

"Yeah, everyone says they want a carpet until they see the price tag. What kind of salesperson are you?" Herr eyes Lucky Dream with suspicion. Most salespeople are the types he likes to avoid, but times were getting desperate, unless this tailed did something deplorable he wasn't going to be too picky.
Leaping Star
She stares absentmindedly at the Stranger. She had considered picking up the lost stray to take with her, as it seemed a better alternative to getting pelted with rocks. Sadly it seems to have an owner.
Leaping Star
"Can I have your dog, bug?"
Herr
"Hmmm? Sorry, I don't think I own a dog."
Herr
"Sometimes strays follow me, and I feed them."
Herr
"But food is expensive so I end up having to eat blort food on those days....."
Leaping Star
"Oh, okay."
Leaping Star
She points to Stranger. "May I have your 'stray', then?"
Stranger
The Stranger just looks at Leaping Star with a look of disgust.
Herr
"Been asked that more times than I care to say. He might not talk much, but he's a person, and I ain't no slaver, so don't you ask about him or any other cekeki. Cekekis are people, even if they stop moving."

"You wouldn't happen to have a spare business idea a fellow salesman could use? I considered putting my money into buying one of those item combination machines from an AI, but the deal seemed a bit fishy to me. Plus the upfront cost is huge."

"It's not really the best idea, but it's kind of all I got left."
Leaping Star
Leaping Star taps the bottom of her faceplate, pacing a little on the sands as she tries to think.
Leaping Star
"What did you sell before, Mr. Bug?"
Herr
"It's Herr, and it was carpets, fabrics, that sort of stuff, but there ain't no way I'm going to be able to sell those anymore without the machine I made fibers with working anymore."

"I wouldn't know of the trends on a vacation spot like this ... Have you heard chatter about any other shops around, what they've been doing?"

"Well have you asked what the people are wanting or in need of? There has to be something people need besides carpets or fabric goods."

"Yeah, I have. Except this is a lawless sector so what they want is usually dubious. I could make bank if I sold cekekis. Everyone is always offering me high prices for cekekis, but those are my employees! Or, well the ones they ask for were my employees. They're not mentally there anymore, but I still don't think that's a reason to sell them. If I wasn't you know, there, I'd like someone to not chop me up for a fancy meal or sell me as a toy."
Stranger
"........" The stranger tugs on the robe of Leaping Star and whispers to her. ("How much would you buy me for? The money would go to Pa, of course.")
Leaping Star
"I don't have money! People usually just give me things when I ask."
Stranger
The Stranger doesn't respond to Leaping Star. He wishes him and his Pa were as lucky to get things when they asked.

Junebugg nervously fidgets with her ears, tugging at them in sympathy. "Oh no! That's very cruel of them ... I wouldn't like selling my mom or something, no matter how excited people were to buy her!! I'm sorry."

"Sorry, I know "ethical" and "salesman" are kind of a joke, but when I was offered this Zookeeper job, I really thought I could do it....and I was. Till well. A man got turned into fabric."

Lucky's arise waves its arms around. It thinks that there's many ways to earn money, then it points at Herr and growls.

"Oh, well sure! I was curious about all the islands about here. I even heard there was some strange creatures around a few of them." Maybe some storytelling would help ease his worries.

"Once upon a time, out on the sea was a small cruise ship. Showing the world beyond these small islands. One day, a great iron whale hit the ship, but the captain refused to tell the guests because the horrible reviews would doom his cruise."

"He requested repairs on the ship so he could get it back to harbor, but one of the crew members tried to warn the guests, not caring for these threats of bad reviews! For this he was tossed overboard and forced to swim back to land, where no matter how long he waited the ship never came back to harbor."

"Parts of the story I change every time I tell it. Makes it more fun that way. Which parts are true, which are lies, you figure it out." Herr shrugs, not even throwing off the allegations.

"I don't know if its pain is what it wants, but I don't know what it wants. I don't want fabric to be made of life. I ain't a vegan, far from it, but I can't imagine killing a fish for fabric when I know I can use trash and seaweed instead."

"I eat because I am hungry. I do not kill because I need a new carpet. I think it makes more sense to just make the fabric more expensive. Maybe I could make a hundred carpets in a day if I pushed the machine, but think of all the waste of life."

"Plus, if there's so many carpets, people might not pick the ones they like, just any old carpet or cloth. Just start hoarding them. Swapping them out all the time. A good carpet like the ones I make can last a family generations, I'd be disappointed if they were tossed aside for whatever looks better."

"The captain around here, he's my good friend. He tells me that I should just "do it" and that "life has never been fair." After all, "the fish you catch are in the sea one moment, and suddenly in your jaws the next, that isn't fair either"....but I just can't see it that way. He's kind of an animal freak."

Herr brings them down to the basement of ZooCorp. He turns on the lights and freezes. The machine was hollowed, its innards stolen. "Ah...Where....who?"

A cekeki weaves in and out between the legs of the guests. "Got rid of the problem, boss."
Stranger
The Stranger mouths words, but sinks towards the ground, too scared to speak.

"Ah, I assume then this isn't what you meant to show us.."

Leaping Star brings her legs together, watching the cekeki snake beneath the others.
Herr
"Ray, what did you do!?"

"Sold the machine, thought that's what you wanted, boss."

"Said you hated it and wanted it gone. Sold it for about oooooh, zero points."

"It's alright, bet you would have sold it for a bottle of water or some shit."
