IT'S A ZOO OUT THERE
[Mysterious New World - Reverse: 1999]
It's been 24 hours since anyone has heard from Yu
"Hey, not to be rude, birdbrain, but a lady has to go back to work in a day or so. Is there any reason for the delay?"
"Uh, sorry, I'm honestly not sure. Yu hasn't come back and we can't start without them."
"I wonder if SOMEONE scared off Yu."
"Awww geez, you're right. What if the Hot Stuff got super duper mad at Yu for asking for supplies? That'd really suck! I just wanted to make sure their pet would be fed. D:"
"That's........" Cargo hisses but doesn't continue, opting to change topics away from her mother. "Cowboy, why does Yu have a pet?"
"You told me Yu doesn't have pets anymore....."
"I thought so too, ok? I wouldn't lie to you. I...I think this might be something new. Yu is scared of spiders! Yu got me to scare off the last spiders given to them because they were creeped out by them."
"Wowie, seeing the cool and calm Cowboy lose his cool is a real treat!"
"You....You did something? Didn't you mother?"

"Uuuuuuuh, no?"
"Oh yeah? Well everyone knows what YOU do to people like Yu! You're always giving fucked up advice, hurting people for "the betterment of everyone!" Did you private message Yu? Get their address? Hire some mailman to take them out while the rest of us slept?"
"Cargo, honey, can you stop being so accusatory to your dear ole mama?...."

"No...I...I remember that. I was there for that. It was a mistake. Nautilus didn't mean it."
"Course he didn't mean it, honey."
"And nor did I when accidentally took him on a walk to talk about the problem and he fell into a mine."
"You WANTED that to happen!"
"So a guy can accidentally kill your sister but the sun forbid a man accidentally falls down a mineshaft and into the ocean."

"You do too much for too many people, birdbrain. Don't worry, we'll totally chill, brah. I think we both have a lot to think about, and I'm sure both of us don't want to add more stress to your plate."

Scarpe aimlessly walks around the park he was supposed to meet the mailman in. It feels like hours have passed to him, but realistically it probably hasn't been that long. He sits down on a random bench, then gets up after a couple minutes, then sits back down. He feels uncomfortably floaty. He feels uncomfortably weightless. Not particularly a good sign.

He looks around for the mailman. For a moment, the park seems to extend forever. It seems to extend even as he stares at it. It moves and shift ever so slightly. It expands beyond where he can see. His head hurts slightly.

"You're about the only person I know that would feel the need to point out something like that with a written out wink, for the record."
"I think the pai visual already gets the point across anyways."
"Doesn't hurt to be candid now does it?"
"You didn't finish telling me how your job went last week. You've sort of kept me hanging for a while now, man."
"You keep getting distracted with all this other shit and only starting the story."

"Just couldn't think of a topic on the spot."
"Well, alright."
"Scammed is a generous word for it. People ask me for things and it's supposed to be in my nature to just give it to them."
"That's why I travel light when I'm out on the town. Sure, take my burner phone if you're that desperate, but if you want any of the actual good stuff we're gonna have to tango."
"You really need like, a burner burner phone. Those things are like the cornerstone of modern civilization or some shit and it's really annoying when you just disappear for days at a time because you gave the one you had on you to someone."
"And then I'll be getting burners for my burner burner phones, where does it end??"
"Do you have any idea how annoying it is? Having people look at you, clock you, realise 'Oh I don't even have to sleep with this one, I can just ask!'"
"Can't afford to be seen as UNHAPPY they're taking my shit for free. Wouldn't wanna be flagged as 'defective' to the big boss."

Scarpe hears a noise and looks up from his phone. The mailman isn't there. The park feels darker than before. His vision focuses on a blade of grass without him meaning to. Passageways stretch out from between the cells in the grass. It takes him a second to realize what he's doing and unfocus. The park is completely, utterly alone.

"Genuinely no clue how you deal with it. In my head a single person wouldn't just, you know, take more than a single phone but you've already told me people will go for backups or gifts for family or what not."
"Man, this IS a shit topic. I just didn't want to talk about how that last run ended, it sort of killed my will to continue playing fortuna for a bit."

"That'd be nice. It's not our usual thing but maybe we could play 'safari', like Helen and PiPy? Take the weight off and let the game play itself for a change."
"Could be cool. It's always cool when some random npc organically stumbles into something you've written and interacts with it in ways you weren't expecting because they don't think like a gamer trying to get cool loot."

Scarpe is suddenly acutely aware of the fact it's deathly silent in the park. This time it feels like he can't particularly focus on much at all. His thoughts become tv static. Like he sat on his brain for a bit too long and now it's asleep. Like there's insects crawling over it. It's foreign.

His heart rate spikes. His breathing becomes suddenly shallower. He looks around himself a little too fast. The bench he's sitting on extends endlessly in a direction. Everything extends endlessly in a direction. He stares at it the same way you would a wild animal, because you know if you look away it'll pounce. The bench keeps going. The grass keeps going. The park keeps going. It converges into a point in the distance. The horizon.

His vision zooms in like a camera that's lost control on the wheel on its side. His focus sharpens, it thins, it becomes infinitesimally small, all centered on the horizon. It keeps zooming in. The horizon keeps getting closer. He keeps focusing. It keeps getting clearer. Suddenly it hits him he's no longer sitting on a bench, in a park.

Formless, unable to think, he grips. Or he thinks he grips, he's not entirely sure. In a way, this feels just like the showtime punishment, while also simultaneously exactly unlike it. The ground splits into paths. Those paths split into lines. Those lines split into light. His eyes hurt. He realizes if he keeps gripping he's going to dig his nails right through his palms. He releases his grip. Or he thinks he does, he's not entirely sure.

"I must be delirious." He thinks, in a format clearer than any he's ever thought in before.

"It'll pass." He thinks, for the first time in his life perfectly confident in a thought supported by absolutely nothing.

This, too, he thinks, is faith. He begins to crawl the endless light as if it was the most natural thing to do. As if the world itself moved under his legs, or lack thereof, rather than the other way around. As if he glides.

It speeds up. For a second he's travelling millions of miles a second. For a second he, too, is light. For a second the terrain stops being terrain and becomes himself. Then he abruptly stops, his attention caught by a corner in the maze. An answer he was seeking, though he himself was never aware of it. Though he himself feels shame at the thought. Though he himself would rather not know. He closes his eyes but it's in the back of his eyelids.

Freshly imported. Camera's on. The audience awaits. A slightly different line. A slightly different mood. A slightly different posture. Nobody knows that you are new. The question answers itself. The cheers resonate with your head. Your heart brims. Your lungs bloom. The next day, the news are menial. Unrelated. Someone you knew was ethically culled due to old age. Watching the news brings you to tears. You don't understand why, but you feel something is different.

No. EVERYTHING is different. The consequences of a single subtle change expand endlessly. Television is great for the soul. You never look at the news again. They're the way they're meant to be. Joy fills you. The answer you didn't want to hear, but ultimately secretly desperately should have. The answer you had already actually known, yet refused to accept.

Birds overhead scream.

You follow the one who didn't die throughout their life. It's boring. It blooms. It loves. They didn't succeed at many things. They had a lot of tiny successes on the other hand. They cleaned the dishes and put away their laundry that one day, even though they were tired. They die. Your focus quickly swaps to his neighbor. It dies. Your focus swaps to a plant. It withers. Your focus quickly swaps to a different one. It soon dies. Your focus settles on a blade of grass. It takes forever for it to die. Then the next. Then the next. Then the next.

You're overcome with joy. You want to die. Or are you already? You won't get to see that blade of grass die if you do. You don't mind. You do, but you tell yourself you don't. You're lying.

Someone's here.

Someone's here. Someone's here. Someone's here. Someone's here. Someone's here.

Finally. You've been in this park forever.

That hat looks stupid, by the way.
Cowboy looks up to the other birds and nods, silently thanking them for finding Scarpe. "Holy shit, dude. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to take so long coming over. You ok?"
"Uh...Sorry that's a dumb question."
Scarpe can barely tell he's alive.

He groans, loudly, in response to the question. He breathes in and chokes.
"You're not the mailman."
"Ha! I ain't smart enough to be the mailman."
"Sorry about lying to you, but it was for your.....ah...Maybe more the safety of others."
Scarpe can't quite tell where cowboy is standing. He can tell where he's stood and will stand, however.

"That ain't no good." Cowboy leans over Scarpe. "If I touch you, you ain't going to bite me, right? Worried there might still be some residue on your teeth. I really don't get the whole shrimp thing, man. What was so important that you needed to know?"
"...How to escape, I think. In a general way. I don't think I've veered off that path just yet, either."
"I brush my teeth, you know? I wouldn't have any gunk still left in there."
"I don't particularly know how I'd bite you anyways."
"I'd likely dodge an attack, but you never know. A bandit raccoon like you operates at one times speed, but those shrimps really mess with the mind."
"Seen folks push their bodies far past what's physically allowed. Ripping the muscles right in their bodies and heating up their brains past even the worst fevers." Cowboy kneels down, checking Scarpe's eyes and teeth. He reels back with an angry click and mumbles. "It's bad, dude."

At the mention of it, Scarpe sees his body torn apart as he lunges at Cowboy. His legs rend as he surprises them and sinks their teeth into their neck. Arms desperately mold into place to keep him bound and where he is. Flesh contorts and reshapes. Serves a new purpose. He snaps back to reality. He thinks. He's not sure.

He almost vomits.

"...You're, really. Ugh. You're really dense at the worst of times. When I say in a general way I mean it. Just take that to mean everything. I wanted to escape everything. Everything.

You ever wonder what happens when you eat shrimp without really thinking the specifics about what you want to know? It picked for me, and I liked what I saw."
"I thought someone else was here."
"No one here but me and the fellas!" Cowboy chirps while he tries to pick up Scarpe.
The other birds scream. Time grinds to a near halt for Cowboy.
[György Ligeti: Lux Aeterna]
With as slow as time was moving for him, Cowboy was shocked at how fast the red mass from the sun had shot down. His brain overworked itself, shooting Cowboy from experiencing time at a normal rate, to being so slow that dust in the air seemed to hang still. Cowboy unfurled the wings he wrapped around himself and dropped Scarpe, though, from his point of view Scarpe seemed to hang midair.
"Hey, are you here to help him?" Recovering from the shock, Cowboy jumps forward.

COWBOY
Subspecies: Eagle
Status: Alive and Healthy. Prime of his life.
Social name: None, he uses his pet name even with wild animals.
Temperament: Unusually friendly.
Genetic Future: Male. While eagles typically need "assistance" this one has located a mate all by himself without help. Sadly, mate has low fertility so unless mate is medicated for this his genetic future is bleak.
Past History: Therapy animal. Released by owner without contacting breeder first to reclaim it. Has integrated with wild fauna.

Notes:

  • Medication has failed to correct his lack of typical aggression seen in eagles. Dosage may need adjustment or medication changed.

  • Maybe aggression will come back if bored?

  • "Unsightly" habit of defacing non-living objects that resemble animals. This is common in eagles but due to his friendly temperament others "expect better."

  • Large member of his species.

  • Mate is part of a pedigree project.

  • Due to handling, reacts to me, and people like me with friendliness. Attempts to dissway this trait via loud noises, threats, and charging does not change this. This will get him killed. He's in the wild now. He needs to feel fear.

SHADOW
Subspecies: Wild Raccoon
Status: Alive, severely intoxicated, likely hid signs of long term mental illness.
Social name: Scarpe
Temperament: Largely independent, learnt to be social mostly out of necessity.
Genetic Future: Male. Open to both sexes, however only has experience with same sex. Does not actively seek mates. Outlook dire.
Past History: Irresponsibly adopted by family due to appealing visuals. Did not properly understand how to care for an animal, letalone a wild one. Promptly sent back. Has reintegrated with wild fauna however experience seems to have affected sense of self worth.

Notes:

  • More nocturnal than most.

  • Concerned with cleanliness as is typical of species.

  • Good at faking wellbeing. Will often hide sickness.

  • Average in size, though thin for his species.
"Shadow.......Little Buck's friend. How sad that you must be culled. Little Buck ain't going to be happy."
"He-Hey, come on, he's not that bad! Don't you got something that can help him?"
The sun points a tendril at Cowboy. A great hot light builds up, threatening to turn Cowboy to ash.
Cowboy tilts his head, awaiting to see what the sun does. He feels no fear and even jumps closer to see the pretty light.

The sun becomes scared that Cowboy might get so close that he'd burn himself on the flames. "Releasing animals into the wild without reintegration efforts is foul, pal."
Seeing Cowboy unharmed, the other birds shuffle forward, curious. The tendrils of the sun slap the ground again, and while they scatter, they do not flee as far as they did before. "You're going to teach the wildlife bad habits. What if it was a hunter, huh, pal? You'd be dead. All of you."
"But I know it ain't a hunter. It's just you!"
"Make that mistake once, and it's death." The other birds begin to perch on the sun, poking at and inspecting the cozy warm mass.
There is a part of the sun that is overjoyed to see how happy the creatures of its planet are. It shakes slightly, desperately wanting to pet them, to coo at them, to hold their lovely shapes, knowing that it is all its work that keeps them alive and thriving.
But it knows that doing this is bad. If it starts to pet an animal, it is only reasonable to remove it from the planet and to make it a pet, maybe sell it off to someone else who could love it. The sun had no time to focus on more personal pets.
The sun just couldn't stomach hurting the animals this time to teach them to stay away. It already had bad news to bring to its beloved pet, Buck. "I do not know why you love these things, but please take these, and leave me alone. Know that this is a bad habit to learn." The sun holds out golden coins and gems. It tosses it across the floor. The birds leap off of the tendrils to grab the expensive gifts.
"Hey, uh, let's not get distracted, folks!"
"Oh....but that is a lot of money...."

"If you think about it. Nothing I can do. What am I suppose to do? Fight the sun? Might as well not beat myself up over this. I'll miss you man. Hope culling goes well!" Cowboy leaps off from his perch to join the madness of the other birds diving after the money.
The sun slowly drags its tendril in. How much it wished it could throw ethics to the wind and frolic like an animal with them.
But the sun knows better. Those kind of thoughts are criminal. Invasive, and need to be killed or reformed.

BUCK
Subspecies: Pedigree Rabbit
Status: Alive and healthy, my little trooper.
Social name: He has integrated into the wilds using his pet name. Are there any animals who would think to call for Sunday anymore?
Temperament: Friendly and sociable with me and other animals, but gets shy around people. A marked recovery from early life trauma.
Genetic Future: Male. Successful stud of a six year breeding project. It will be some time before the fitness of this specimen's progeny can be assessed, but with the few there are we should see if his genes are project viable in the coming years.

Notes:

  • Aesthetic pedigree features presented during adolescence, what a pleasant surprise it was to see that beautiful dark pattern developing.

  • While receptive to living in the wilds temporarily to meet mates he has no interest in a permanent residence there, so he lives with me as a pet instead.

  • Holds little and sporadic interest in enrichment or 'hobbies', yet consistently performs such interests for other animals. Fascinating.

The sun clicks as it lowers a tendril towards Buck, petting him. "Stupid little furball. I love the way you greet me."
He wraps both arms around the small sliver of the sun lowered into his home, squeezing it gently as he presses his cheek into it. "I missed you."
"You smell like..." He stops, sniffing. "Bird. Birds."
"Where did you go?"
"I missed you too, stupid. Sadly I don't have good news."
"I got excited, thinking that the medication was finally working on a released eagle I was watching, but when I got there....."

"Ah. It's no use having me explain, little Buck. I know you animals need to see the body to understand. Your friend is not in good condition." The sun unfurled a tendril and gently places Scarpe on the ground. The sun pets Scarpe, as if doing so would heal him. "I'm sorry pal, I didn't know anything was wrong with him till it was too late."
His eyes follow down along the uncoiling flesh, meeting several eyes down the way until they settle upon a familiar figure.
"Scarpe?"
Being carried through the sky by the sun was inevitably disorienting. Everything that was already moving fast suddenly speeds up and accelerates. Scarpe wasn't dead yet but he didn't particularly feel alive either. He doesn't get up.

"...Hey."

"Buck.....Ah....one moment. I believe your species will not understand like this." The sun leaves for a moment, and comes back with a coffin. It lowers Scarpe into it.

"Scarpe is dying. I will be culling him soon, pal. Just wanted you to see him before that, that way you know he died."
The wood is kind of hard. This kind of sucks. What the fuck man. This is demeaning.
"I do not get the point of the.....box. Is it a home to die in? The body will rot soon after, so there is no point." The sun mumbles. "Ignore me, pal. I just think this tradition is so interesting." The sun pets the box, as if it was part of the animal inside of it.
"I can leave you alone. I heard animals like you need "alone time" to process death."
Buck releases the sun, stepping over towards the coffin. He pushes his palm up into his eye, waiting for the tears to gather before smearing them away.
"Alone, please. Thank you."
"Understandable. Enjoy your processing of this situation as best you can." The sun slinks out of the room, driving it to darkness.
He stares up at the sun, waiting until it has fully left his home.
Then he looks down at the body in the coffin, bouncing a foot anxiously.
The body in the coffin looks back up at him.

"Uh. Hi?"
"You're such a dick."
"There was a show I'd been meaning to watch with you. I was gonna tell you about it next time I stopped over at Showtime."
"Maybe we could watch it now?"
"...Sure thing, but I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to get up this second."
"Maybe you could..."
"Prop up the coffin or something."
"..."
"That's not funny."

"Yeah, it really wasn't. I kind of suck at comedy I realize. Never really understood why I stayed in showtime."
He lowers himself down by the coffin, struggling against the wooden frame to find purchase underneath Scarpe's arms.
It's gruelling. Lifting up a body experiencing rigor mortis whilst it's still alive. Slowly sitting it up onto the edge, lifting the legs over, grappling with the torso as it threatens to fall back into the box.
"...Thanks, I guess."
"Don't say anything."
Slowly, painfully, he drags Scarpe along the floor of his pen. He drags him out in front of the big fancy TV mounted on the wall. Lining up his legs, propping up his body, sitting down behind him. He wraps both arms around him, keeping him secure, in place.
He turns the TV on. The show starts.
And he sighs a long, winded sigh.

The screen lights up. The characters move around. A title card flashes on screen. Two characters walk around an empty parking lot, talking to each other about menial things. One of them punches the other. A fight begins. It's depicted in this particularly unrefined and mundane manner. The punches barely have any impact, and both actors look out of shape.

His head falls to the side, an audible 'thunk' as skull meets skull.

"Ow?"
"...I guess it's not the worst pick for something to watch. Overproduced stuff tends to make my brain turn off."
"I said shut up!"
"Will do, boss."
"..." He runs a hand through Scarpe's hair. It's fluffy, if a little damp with sweat.
"..."
"I'm trying to decide if I hate you or not." He chuckles, "Talking's just gonna make that harder."

It's not a particularly good show, it felt. While the camerawork was strangely phenomenal at times, this only served to make the scenes in which it wasn't great stand out. The dialogue felt stunted and awkwardly acted.

"...I don't think you particularly need to forgive me, for the record."
"What the fuck is this, man?"
"Where's this coming from? What's it all about?"
"I go 'Scarpe buddy, pal. You doing okay? You're a little quiet today.'"
"You're all aloof and go 'I'm fine, just playing a game lol.'"
"And then I just go- "
"Okay! Yay!"
"And you've been fucking lying to me???"
"..."

You couldn't quite tell if the emptiness of the setting was an intentional design decision or another sign of a lack of funding. A particular lack of soundtrack accentuated the strange loneliness that perpetuated the scene.

"Say something."
"...What could I actually say?"
"I'm not stupid enough to think a simple "I didn't want to worry you" would smooth things over."
"Stupid enough to keep lying to me."
"..."
"Stupid enough to be dying in my arms, dipshit."
"I don't understand it."
"...I, well. I didn't want to worry you. A part of me thought it was just going to be over eventually."
"I sort of thought it'd be fine if it just got back to normal."
"I don't think I was really ready for that to happen."
"...So here we are, and it never actually passed."

Atleast the actors, bad as they were, were clearly very into their roles. They were by no means good at natural dialogue but they understood the way they were supposed to feel and had mannerisms brimming with an emotion their mouths couldn't quite keep up with. A part of you wonders if this show would be better muted and with subtitles on.

"Is it my fault?"

"Did you think that I'd... that I couldn't handle... you?"
Scarpe tries to not visibly react to those words. A part of him is thankful the sunglasses obscure his eyes.

Your fault? Was it because of you? Was it for you? Did he regret pulling you out of that stupid gag interview that day? Did he regret looking at the news the next day? Did he regret realizing that as he was, he was powerless to stop anything? To change anything? To help?

"...I thought you didn't deserve to be forced to put up with me, rather."
A part of him sits there and refuses to try to think of explanations for everything. Justification was meaningless at this point. Answers meant nothing. This entire ordeal was selfish. He was aware of it. Everything he had done, everything he was doing, everything this was FOR, was selfish. It's not as if selfishness for the sake of another just cancels out.

He's not a moron, he's just a brat.

"...I guess I just didn't want the relationship to change because of me, somehow. A part of me would've rather died alone in an alley somewhere unnoticed."
He uncrosses his arms, hands reaching up from their perch on Scarpe's shoulders. He holds both sides of Scarpe's head and squeezes, lightly.

"Well, it changed, stupid."
"...I guess it did."
"...Hey, it's a little hard to watch the show when you squeeze my head like that."
"Shit, sorry." He lets go, startled hands spasming out to the sides, unsure of themselves.
One finds its perch back on Scarpe's shoulder, the other lifts a lock up out of his eyes, smoothing it into the rest of his hair.

Overall it's a strange sort of mismatch. You feel as if a single aspect of the show being better produced would change it from a 5/10 to a comfortable 8. As if it was being strangled, covered by a thin film that muffled all sound and light coming from it.

"Did we ever talk about my dad?"
"I think we both actively avoided the topic."
"Ha. Yeah."
"A little random, I know. But it's got me thinking."
"I don't remember a lot of things, these days. Island to island, bed to bed, it all just kind of blurs together."
"But there's a moment I remember, clear as day. He was talking to my mother. Yelling, more like, I guess. It was an argument."

"How he was worried about me. How I was gonna turn out like him when I grew up."
His hand shakes a little as he combs through Scarpe's hair, twirling a lock. "He really messed himself up. His body, his head. That way they wouldn't 'want' him. So that he'd be 'left alone.'"
"He could've done anything if she hadn't talked him out of it. I couldn't even begin to understand."
"But I've been here for over... Twenty years now? I'm close to it."
"Sometimes it says things it thinks I don't understand, but I do."
"Sometimes you have to hurt something you love, to make it all better."
"I think you'll be fine if it culls you, it'll almost be like you never left. I'll get to see you every other day and things can be fine."

"Should I do it myself? It'll be awful, the worst thing I'll ever have to do but at least... I won't forget you."
Scarpe shifts slightly trying to think of a response.
He feels Scarpe stirring in his arms, like an animal, trying to wriggle free.
He runs his hand through his hair again, faster, soothing himself just as much as the dying man in his arms. Squeezing him tightly.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"I mean, it's fine, I just-"
"Don't say that man you don't-"
He jolts, body shaking, resisting the need to break down. "Let's just get it over with."
It's awkward, and painful. Shifting from sitting, to kneeling, to standing. Dragging his friend along the ground, over to the bed, propping him upright with the TV still in sight. Buck hurries across the room to a red and black bell, ringing it over and over.
Scarpe struggles to think.
There's a ring that replies back to the Buck's Bell.

The Mailman is on his way.

Neither Buck, nor Scarpe know how the mailman got into the room, just that he was suddenly there, as if he had been hiding, waiting for this moment.

PANDORA
Subspecies: Pedigree Snail
Status: Alive and well, though within a maze in his own mind. Seems to be handling it well.
Social name: The Mailman
Temperament: Lovely "bored" "intelligent" and "uncaring" temperament.
Genetic Future: Male. Currently has 12 offspring. One has been killed in an accident, another recently culled. Rest are active, though 3 of them have been sold off to be pets. One has been returned, the other two are off planet. Outlook is bright. Wish I could have gotten more out of this amazing specimen but it seems unlikely.

Notes:

  • Heavily collects ancient seashells and places them in living spaces, but actually does not care for seashells. Baffling.

  • He has bitten me at one point, terribly so, breaking into skin and getting blood into his mouth. I deserved it as I attempted to take his daughter, Cargo, away from him while he was nearby. I was devastated, assumed he would die, but he didn't. Instead....he became extremely efficient at mail delivery. He has a natural resistance of some sort to our blood. I thought he was only resistant to tranquilizers.

  • He is extremely docile and domesticated but he refuses to become a pet. It almost adds to the charm. I wish I could spread the joy of owning such an aloof animal to everyone.

  • Eats right out of my hand. Does he know I could crush him dead at any moment?

"The mail does not deliver on Sundays." He states, plainly. "So this must be important."
"Hey, pal. Palfriend. Got a message for the big guy."
He snaps his fingers and points over at Scarpe, refusing to look his way. "He's due to die any second now. Can you make this quick for me, pal?"

"If he is due to die, then this is not a rush order. Yet you have called me." The mailman holds his hand out, waiting.
He takes a deep breath, hand on his chest. Composing himself.
He walks back across the room and over to a small box by his bed, failing to ignore Scarpe. "He needs to be absorbed by the sun. So the sun needs to be here."
Placed safely atop a folded blanket are a number of seashells, trinkets from his last trip to the miner's isle. He takes one out, the prettiest one of the bunch by his eye, and brings it over to The Mailman to place in his palm.
"Can you fetch it for me? Please?"

"This shell." The mailman pauses, looking it over. "Belonged to a beast once under the watery sea. It's intelligence was unmatched, but its lifespan too short. It was unable to finish any projects it started, and died with each one unfinished."
The mailman holds the shell up. "But this is a story I have fabricated, because there is no story for it left."
"Write a letter next time." With a blink, the mailman had disappeared. The light of the sun grew closer and closer in mere seconds.
He runs back over to Scarpe, kneeling down by his side. Fixing him up, fixing his hair, supporting his head.
The sun had come back, mailman in tow. It strokes the head of its pedigree snail in thought. "I see, the first stage of the mourning process has ended."

Any forgotten questions can be asked to me, and I will give you the answer. As long as one is eaten, there will never be a true death." The sun drops the mailman and grabs Scarpe, pulling him out the window.
Scarpe's head hurts. What felt like a sudden moment of clarity dissipates. The light from the sun is dizzying.
His mind races. A million possibilities. A billion. Useless information. He's not even particularly sure why he's so nervous.
This wasn't death, after all.
The sun had to interact with the world with its tail.

"What??" He pushes up off of the floor, weak in the knees. The sun had startled him.
"Nooo, nooo." He softens his voice, trying to sound 'cuter'. He approaches the tendril with caution, reaching out to it like he has countless times before.

"Think about the wonderful things you will get to do in the wild, my little Buck. You will be able to enjoy hunting and gathering, or getting a job those other animals like to get. I know you're not fond of many of the other animals, but once you're fixed, I think it will repair a lot of your hostilities. I've heard getting your pet fixed can greatly improve their lifespan and their enjoyment of life!" The sun tightens on Buck, this time no longer for comfort, but with intent.

LADY
Subspecies: Wild Seal (Mother was a Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk.) infected with invasive Copper
Status: Invasive Copper
Social name: Social name changes often at her whim.
Temperament: The temperament of the invasive copper is unknown as I do not study or eat invasive copper. The temperament of the host is friendly and sociable, with sudden moments of aggression, often due to being pushed past her comfort range. Destabilization of her existence is rare but does happen. Usually not harmful, just causes fear in others.
Genetic Future: Invasive Copper. (Female previously) Has had 12 children, one has been killed in an accident, another recently culled. Rest are active, though 3 of them have been sold off to be pets. One has been returned, the other two are off planet. Outlook is bright. Invasive copper has rendered her infertile many years ago.

Notes:

  • Her colors slightly change with her mood due to her Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk heritage. It is the only genetically special trait about her.

  • Her personality has stayed the same even after being affected by invasive copper. This is called mutualistic invasion. Think of it like how we may ride an animal, and in return we feed the animal. I'm not sure what artistic expression the primitive level intelligence invasive copper is getting out of this, but it is interesting to see the interaction between primitive intelligence (The copper) and animal intelligence (The seal).

  • It is a shame my beloved pedigree snail had fallen in love with such a simple specimen, but it is not in my nature to force a mated pair apart. Attempts to gently convince one to separate from the other have failed. I would love for my pedigree project to continue to produce offspring before his culling date, but he continues to stay dedicated. It's kind of cute in a way, that he cannot recognize how important his genes would be to the future of the species out of love. Ah...animals......so simple.
