JUDGEMENT DAY

Monster
Monster hadn't left the house yesterday, and he hadn't taken any visitors.
Monster
The gun ended up in Madam's care, but the world outside still felt unsafe. There was nothing to stop Stranger from trying again, short of finding another gun.
Monster
He considered it might not even be Stranger the next time. Ray had threatened his life before, and the way Monsieur and Madam both looked at him that day... He presumed the worst of them all.
Monster
But something had to give. He couldn't stay holed up in there by himself, his apartment wasn't any safer than the outside world, much the opposite. He was trapped, boxed in, at the mercy of whoever came through the door.
Monster
Which is why with great reluctance he'd made his way back into the office, scurrying straight for Herr's room. He wasn't sure what he was going to do once he got there, but something had to happen. It had to.
Monster
He takes a moment as he stands by the door, rolling his shoulders and popping his neck, sending a jitter down to the skeletal tip of his tail. He managed to gain some semblance of composure, all his fear hidden behind a blank expression, now resting his hand on the door handle.

Madam froze in place as the door handle began to turn. She could only expect the worst: that the Judge had finally found his way to her and Monsieur before she could figure out a plan of action.
Monsieur
"There is nothing to fear." This is what Monsieur had said over and over, but it didn't calm her one bit. She remembered that horrible large cekeki, and how he made it clear. Both of them are next.

Believing herself to be cornered, Madam opens her mouth and lunges at the opening door, hoping while she might be outsized and outpowered, that a surprise attack could give her the edge she needed.
Monster
Monster steps through, his head bowed as to not draw attention to himself.
Monster
To his detriment, as he's almost too late to notice Madam rushing him. He quickly rears back and opens his jaw wide, prepared to pin and bite down as hard as he'd need to to stop her in her tracks.
IT'S A CLASH!
Madam rolls a 20 sided die. A 13 is rolled.
Monster rolls a 20 sided die. A 16 is rolled.
Monster
It all happens so fast, it could only have been instinct driving his actions. He twisted to one side before crashing his body against Madam's, knocking her to the floor, before quickly locking his teeth around the nape of her neck.
Monster
He holds still, just for a few seconds. Looking down at her.
Madam
"Get off of me."
Monster
His jaw widens, carefully easing away from the soft of her neck before the many rows of meat-shredding teeth disappear back beneath the murky tar covering his face.

Instead he looks to Monsieur, his voice flat and cold. "What's going on?"
Monsieur
Monsieur is unsure if he should answer. He looks to Madam for assistance as she gets up, wiping away blood seeping down her neck. "Madam....wishes to run away."
Madam
Madam wipes some of the blood off of herself. She grits her teeth, upset she had nearly killed someone that wasn't her target, and annoyed that Monster was here. "We're getting out of here, and if you know what's best for yourself, you'll get out as well."
Monsieur
Monsieur shakes his head. "No. We will be safe here."
Madam
Madam scoops up Monsieur. "My love, no we won't."
Monster
"You're worried about the kid too?"
Madam
"We're not worried about some kid." Madam snaps.

"I thought I had killed Stranger, but he had eaten Mother who had died, and chased Ray last we saw." In a rare moment, Monsieur's thoughts are scrambled. He doesn't know the best way to explain the events that transpired.
Madam
Madam puts Monsieur on the table and starts pulling drawers apart to grab anything of any value. "If you know what's good for you, you'll run too." She snaps at Monster. "You're Ray's friend."
Monster
Ray's absence suddenly filled the room. From time to time he could only appreciate the moments where Ray wasn't corralling him around, but right now he felt a pit in his stomach.

"What- What do you even..."

"Where's Ray?" He takes a step towards the smaller cekeki. "Monsieur. Where is Ray?"
Madam
"He's dead."
Monster
"I DIDN'T ASK YOU."
Madam
"Hehehehaha...."
Madam
"HAHAHAHAHAA-SNOORT- AHAHAAAAHAHA!!!"
Madam
"Sorry. I needed a bit of a laugh. Maybe it's the fear getting to me, but is this really the time to care about past grievances?"
Monsieur
"We did not see a body." Monsieur adds late, to Madam's comment about Ray being dead. He had already been burned by assuming someone was dead already.
Madam
"You don't escape something like that."
Madam
"Him dying is the only good thing that's going to come out of this."
Monster
He shakes his head to himself, as though he were trying to shake Madam's words out of his head.
Monster
He looks around Herr's room, considering joining Madam in the pillaging. He'd already had his heart set on getting away, this was the chance to do so.
Madam
Madam slams her tail in the way of Monster.
Madam
"Find your OWN spot."
Monster
He glares at Madam with a deep contempt. "Keep your shit, you fucking looter."
Monster
Monster tentatively strides towards what he'd actually laid his eyes on. Herr, hiding beneath his desk.
"Boss? Boss, you okay?"
Herr
Herr breathes heavily but only slinks deeper into the crevice under the desk.
Monster
"C'mon man. Your kid's going on a rampage out there, what're you cowering away for?"

He doesn't dare follow Herr further under the desk. Being trapped somewhere so confined with such a large cekeki only meant danger.
'But if the kid was going to listen to anyone,' he thought, it had to be Herr.

Some days, Herr could understand the world around him. He could make sense of it nearly as well as he did before the incident. But when he became stressed, it felt as if the world distorted with his blood pressure.

"Grrrknnar..." He tried to speak. All he knew was that there was a lot of noise, that his office was being torn apart, there was blood in the air, and he couldn't figure out what was happening except for the words kill and death.
Monster
He balls a fist, snout creasing out of frustration. He feels the muscles in his arm twitch, but rather than strike Herr he just pounds the balls of his palm against his forehead. "You poor fuck..."

Monsieur shakes his head. "Monster can take from here."
Monsieur
"Because I am not leaving, so he can have what would have been mine."

Madam grabbed all she could and held her hand out to Monsieur.
Monsieur
"Madam. I have said it already. I do not want to leave. Everything I own is here, and this is the safest place to be."
Madam
"Monsieur, no items are worth the risk. They can be replaced."
Madam
"We can find new beaches, new shells....."
Monsieur
"We cannot know if we will survive out there. I know I will survive here."
Madam
"Even without me?"
Madam
She doesn't wait for Monsieur to reply. She already knows him too well. "Haha...."
Madam
"I guess I'm an idiot for running away, huh?"
Madam
"That's all I ever do."
Monsieur
"It is not. You do many other things, such as smile, and work, and hold me. In comparison you rarely run. You prefer to walk most places."
Madam
"Pwhahahaha!!!"
Madam
"Monsieur, you are so kind to be offering a coward one more joke for the road."
Monsieur
"It wasn't a joke."
Madam
Madam gives her love a quick kiss. "I know."
Madam
She puts on a smile, but her tears betray her. "It's never a joke with you. That's why I love you so, you silly little thing."
Madam
"May we meet again, on another beach, in this life or the next, my love. My Monsieur." Madam tilts her hat over her eyes as she vanishes out of the room.
Monster
Monster steps out from underneath the desk, a paw tentatively hovering in the air as he considers his next move.

He couldn't have blocked out the exchange even if he wanted to. It hurt, but in a way that made everything else numb. There was suddenly far less urgency to it all.

Monsieur looked towards Monster. "I lied to her for the first time in my life."
Monsieur
"......but I will not lie to you."
Monster
He tilts his head slightly, looking Monsieur in the eyes.
Monsieur
"I do not know if we are safe."
Monsieur
"I just wanted her to stay with me."
Monster
"But she's gone."
Monster
He glances over at the door. Judgement could be here at any moment, but instead he returns his gaze to Monsieur.
Monster
"Are you okay?"
Monsieur
"That question is vague. It could mean many things. Emotionally, physically, economically, mentally. To state it as so is to force the answerer to pick his own perception of the question, and the reality that surrounds it."

"If you know all that surely you can just take a moment to pick one? Given the context, it's clearly a matter of emotional and mental."

"People only say "I'm fine" cause they don't wanna talk about what's bothering them."

"It's embarrassing, and makes things awkward."
Monsieur
"This is untrue. One must also consider the relationship between themselves and the asker with such questions. For instance, it is rude to tell one you do not know that you are not fine, as it imposes stress that the asker did not intend to be brought out with a casual statement."

"Most people are fine, in the vastness of the question being asked. In that split second, they can see that they are fine enough in the grand scheme of the universe. That their issues are minor in the moment, minor enough to not weigh down others with what they are dealing with. They do not say they are fine because they are scared to speak, but because they are fine in some sense of the word."

"You are asking the wrong question. Offering me an empty question to fill the void that has left the room. I have given you an empty answer in return, as is believed to be correct."
Monster
"Well it's not. What idiot asks if someone's okay if they're not prepared to hear a no?"
Monster
He begins to feel awkward just standing around, so Monster begins to rearrange the room, putting things back on shelves that had been knocked to the floor.

"I have informed you I am fine, because I am fine, but I have explained why I am fine, because I know you will refuse this answer without explanation, because you do not understand me like Madam did."

"There is no use in cleaning this room. It will be tarnished by blood soon."
Monster
He holds one of Herr's shells in his hand, twisting round to face the smaller cekeki.
"You don't think you're safe at all!"
Monsieur
"Yes. I informed you I had lied to Madam about this out of selfishness, and that instead I would tell you the truth."
Monster
"You spoke in uncertain terms, don't play semantics with me."
Monsieur
"I cannot know if I will die or not, just that I know that death is always a chance. You can walk across a street, and be struck by a car on even the best of days. Maybe I will sit here, and be fine, but it is more likely that I will die."
Monster
"But... I still don't understand. If you think you're going to die, wasn't there a better time to play these sorts of games?"
Monsieur
"I am not playing a game. I do not know how a game could be played at a moment such as this. I just knew that I wanted Madam, and that I was willing to lie for that. She has logically left, and I have not gone with her, because I am aware that if I were to, her chance of survival would be lower."
Monster
Still looking at Monsieur, Monster slides the shell back in to place.
Monster
He walks over to Monsieur, looming over him.
Monster
"Can we just go?"
Monsieur
"If I did not leave with Madam, I will not leave with you. You may leave, but I will stay here."
Monster
He looks up at the door. His heart sinks.
Monster
"P-Please. There's nothing for me out there."
Monster
"I just... I can't do it on my own."
Monsieur
"Perhaps if you had followed Madam she would have reconsidered her attitude towards you without me around anymore."
Monsieur
"But that chance has vanished just as she has." Monsieur jumps down from the table as a looming figure blocks the only escape.

"How do you think I've done? Real reflection aren't I?"
Monster
He squints, bringing a hand up to wipe away some of the tar hanging from his jaw.
Monster
He hops down from the desk, joining Monsieur on the floor.
Monster
"Why would you ever aspire to be like a man named Monster?"

"Because you had friends. Love. People who cared about you. Things GOOD people should have."

"Haha, oh, how foolish I was. A little stranger who thought he was more than that. You see, what I learned is that Good people don't want such things. They don't act good, just so they can get those. Good people are good because they are good. When you have to think to yourself "Maybe I'll walk Monsieur to work just so he will learn to like me-" than that's a sign that you're a disgusting animal, and everyone knows it."

He sighs, sitting back. "I mean, I get it kid."

"I'd be lying if the thought of killing all the 'bad people' in my life hadn't crossed my mind."

He considers it. Why had he even adopted the name Monster in the first place?

It was kind of like a brand, something snappy and strong. The word had rung in his head some years ago until it made a permanent stay.

Maybe it was because of how he'd made her feel.
Monster
Or just a way to explain how he felt about himself.

He couldn't. In this moment he wasn't sure he was, not sure enough to make a case for himself.

"I can't tell you I'm a good person. I just don't think I'm a bad person either."

"For the past however many years, I don't think I've been a person at all."

"Just a phantom of my own life."

In an instant it was like every hope and promise hadn't even mattered. Now it was just survival.
Monster
Judgement was bearing down on him, and it felt inescapable. Yet in the heat of that moment his eyes fell on Monsieur.
Monster
The man that had taken what mattered most from him.
Monster
His jaw clicks as he springs towards the smaller cekeki. If he was going to HELL, he'd be sure to see that bastard there.
Monster
Monster lunges at Monsieur.
Monsieur
Monsieur doesn't move.
IT'S A CLASH!
Monster rolls a 20 sided die. A 6 is rolled.
Herr rolls a 20 sided die. A 17 is rolled.

As Monster went to eat Monsieur, all Herr could see was Ray trying to attack his dear sweet Stranger, or any of those other small cekekis at the office. He had to defend them. He had to scare off Ray like he always did.
Herr
Lunging out from under the desk, Herr snaps down on the neck of Monster like a gator coming out from the waters. He didn't mean to bite down so hard. He tries to let go....
The Judge
But to anyone else, Herr was shaking Monster's neck back and forth in an attempt to kill him. "Eugh!...." The Judge backs away at the sight of the monster that had taken over his father. "I....I....."

And then, an awful smile ripped across his face. "Ah, you know. This is the perfect punishment for you. A monster killed by a monster he watched be born."
Monster
The flesh of hind legs had lost all corporeality, two skeletal paws lifted up to kick and scratch at Herr's jaw in a feeble attempt to break free.
The Judge
"No blood on my hands here. It's what you deserve." The Judge swung his tail around the doorknob and closed the door on the way out.
Monsieur
Monsieur stood perfectly still as the Judge left. While he avoided judgement for now, he knew his time would be coming soon.
Monsieur
He looks at Monster.
Monster
Blood pools out of the corner of his mouth, he feels Monsieur's gaze but can't stand to return it.
Monster
The Judge was right. He was guilty, and he would die a Monster.
Monster
He got what he deserved.
Monsieur
While Monster would die of guilt, all Monsieur felt was one thing as he watched Monster's final breaths-
Monsieur
-how dirty all this blood would make the carpet.
